Dindigul

Dindigul has manufactured locks since the eighteenth century, and small workshops still turn out the handcrafted brass and steel locks that earned it the nickname Lock City, long before factory production took over most of the trade. The rock fort at the center of town, built by Vijayanagara rulers and later strengthened by Tipu Sultan, gives sweeping views over the plains and the Sirumalai hills nearby. Dindigul biryani, cooked with a distinct blend of spices and often served with a boiled egg, has its own devoted following across Tamil Nadu, considered a distinct style from the more famous Hyderabadi version.
