Ujjain

Ujjain is one of Hinduism's seven sacred cities and one of only four sites in India that hosts the Kumbh Mela, the mass pilgrimage that draws millions of visitors roughly every twelve years, known locally as Simhastha. The Mahakaleshwar temple here holds one of twelve jyotirlingas, shrines considered the holiest form of Shiva worship in the faith, and its Bhasma Aarti, performed before dawn with sacred ash, is unique to this temple. Ujjain also has a long history as an astronomical center: ancient Indian astronomers used the city as a prime meridian for calculations, and a Jantar Mantar observatory, built in the 18th century, still stands with its stone instruments intact.
