Foggia

Foggia sits on the Tavoliere, Italy's second-largest plain after the Po valley, a flat wheat-growing expanse that has made the city a trading center since Roman times. Emperor Frederick II favored the area in the 13th century, and though his palace in Foggia itself is largely gone, the octagonal Castel del Monte and the fortress town of Lucera nearby preserve his architectural legacy. Allied bombing in 1943 destroyed much of the historic center, which explains why Foggia's cityscape today is mostly postwar rather than medieval, a contrast with much of the rest of Puglia. The Gargano peninsula, with its beaches and ancient forests, lies within easy reach to the north.
