Chisinau

Chisinau is Moldova's capital and by far its largest city, laid out with wide, tree-lined boulevards after a 19th-century earthquake and fire prompted a redesign, then rebuilt again after heavy damage in the Second World War left much of it Soviet in character today. The city is the gateway to some of the world's largest wine cellars, at Cricova and Milestii Mici nearby, tunnels dug from limestone mining that now hold millions of bottles along streets long enough to require a car to tour. Stefan cel Mare Park, named for Moldova's most revered medieval ruler, runs through the center and stays busy with chess players and strollers.
