Bay of Islands

Bay of Islands is a stretch of Northland coastline in New Zealand scattered with dozens of small islands, anchored by the towns of Paihia, Russell, and Kerikeri. Russell, formerly Kororareka, served as New Zealand's first permanent European settlement and briefly its capital before the seat moved to Auckland. The Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 between Maori chiefs and the British Crown, sit across the water from Russell and remain the country's most significant historic site.
