Kyoto

Kyoto was Japan's imperial capital for over a thousand years and remains its cultural center, home to thousands of Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, geisha districts, and traditional gardens largely spared from the bombing that reshaped Tokyo and Osaka. It moves slower and feels more preserved than Japan's modern capital, drawing visitors for craft, ritual, and architecture rather than nightlife or business. The old wooden machiya townhouses still line entire streets in the Gion district.

Kaiseki, a multi-course seasonal meal built around presentation as much as flavor, is the dish most associated with Kyoto's refined food culture. Yudofu, simple simmered tofu, reflects the city's Buddhist temple-cooking roots. Photographing geisha or maiko without permission is now restricted in parts of Gion after years of tourist complaints, and visitors should stay on marked paths.
