Why Visit at Night
The Louvre draws close to nine million visitors a year, and most of them arrive between late morning and mid-afternoon. Evening hours cut through that. Visitor counts in the final ninety minutes before closing run well below the midday peak, which means shorter lines at the pyramid entrance and a clearer view of the Mona Lisa, the Winged Victory of Samothrace, and the rest of the collection without craning around a tour group. The building itself looks different at night too: the glass pyramid lit against the dark courtyard is one of the more photographed views in Paris for a reason.
Late Opening Hours
The Louvre is open daily except Tuesdays, generally from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. On Wednesdays and Fridays, it stays open until 9:45 PM, with last entry about 45 minutes before close. Those two evenings are the standard way to see the museum after dark without booking anything special, and they're worth building a Paris itinerary around if evenings are your only free time during the day.
Free First Friday Evenings
On the first Friday of the month, the Louvre opens free of charge from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. This runs most of the year but pauses in July and August; the next scheduled date is Friday, September 4, 2026. Free evenings are popular, so arriving right at 6:00 PM, or slightly before, gives the best odds of a manageable line at the entrance.
Guided Night Tours
Beyond the museum's own late hours, private tour operators run guided evening visits, typically around two hours, covering the major wings with a smaller group and a guide who can navigate straight to the highlights instead of wandering. These run on the museum's regular Wednesday and Friday late nights and are worth booking ahead if a private, unhurried pace matters more to you than saving on the ticket price.
Practical Notes
- Photography without flash is allowed throughout most of the museum, and evening light through the pyramid roof gives noticeably better photos than the midday glare.
- The Denon wing, home to the Mona Lisa and the Italian paintings, is the most crowded gallery even in the evening; saving it for later in your visit, once the after-work rush has thinned out, makes for an easier viewing.
- Coat and bag storage is available near the pyramid entrance, useful if you're arriving straight from a flight or a full day of walking elsewhere in the city.
- The Carrousel du Louvre underground entrance tends to have shorter lines than the main pyramid entrance on busy evenings.
