A gala invitation is exciting until you open your wardrobe and realise nothing in it says black tie. Formal events have real rules, but they are learnable, and getting them right means you spend the evening enjoying yourself instead of feeling underdressed.
What black tie actually means
For most galas, black tie means a floor-length gown or a sophisticated formal dress, elevated fabrics, and considered accessories. Black tie optional gives you a little more room, but err formal: it is far better to be slightly overdressed at a gala than under.
The gown is the decision

If the gala is in another city, a gown needs care in transit. Pack it flat or rolled in tissue, hang it the moment you arrive, and build in time for a steam.
