What "Going Direct" Actually Means
"Going direct" does not mean couples are doing everything themselves. It means they use a boutique coordinator (for day-of logistics) plus direct vendor discovery for the talent-heavy categories: photography, videography, band or DJ, hair and makeup.
The motivation is cost, control, and quality:
- Cost: planner referral networks carry implicit markups of 10 to 20% on vendor rates. When your photographer costs $12,000, that markup is $1,200 to $2,400 paid invisibly.
- Control: couples who research themselves feel more confident in their choices and have a direct relationship with each vendor from the start
- Quality: the best vendors at each tier are often discoverable directly and have no incentive to be in a planner referral network
What Is Driving the Shift
1. Discovery platforms with portfolio depth
Couples can now browse 40 to 100 photographer or videographer profiles in an afternoon, filtering by aesthetic, location, and rate tier. This was not possible in 2015 when portfolio review meant visiting multiple websites individually.
2. Subscription-model directories
Platforms where professionals pay to list (not commission-based) create different incentives. Vendors have reason to keep profiles current, list real rates, and respond promptly. This subscription model changes the information asymmetry that made direct booking feel risky.
3. Social proof at scale
Review depth for professional photographers, DJs, and makeup artists is now substantial enough that couples feel comfortable without a planner vouching for the vendor.
What It Means for Vendors
For photographers, DJs, makeup artists, and videographers at the luxury tier, going direct is an opportunity:
- More of your rate stays with you when there is no referral commission paid out
- Direct client relationships mean you control the brand experience end-to-end
- Discovery platform visibility reaches couples outside any single planner network
The tradeoff is more inquiry management. Direct bookings mean more initial conversations that do not convert, compared to planner referrals where the client is pre-qualified.
What Luxury Couples Still Use Planners For
Full-service planners remain valuable for venue selection and contract negotiation, day-of coordination across 20+ vendors, budget architecture, and international or destination weddings.
For destination weddings in Lisbon or other European cities, a local coordinator who knows the venue landscape is almost always worth the cost. See our top wedding venues in Lisbon guide and visa rules for crew in Europe.
