Overview
Theater Play: Casting An American Mess, a modern family drama taking place in MA in 2026, which investigates the impact of identity politics on intersectional households as well as the social responsibilities of minorities in the face of oppression. Synopsis: When Kais older sister Amanda introduces her Asian-American fiance to their messy family, Kai makes every effort to avoid an argument with his mother, Karen, who is disrespectful of his pronouns and his girlfriend Marianas Mexican-American identity. Arriving late, Mariana explains that she had to avoid a car that was following her. For much of the dinner, Kai and his relatives are able to avoid and talk around the more pressing and fraught social issues of the day. However, amidst a frantic search for smoke detector batteries, Kai discovers a scrapbook his mother had promised to throw away - old photos of him from before his transition.
