Position Description
We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to play a key role in building and scaling the Okta Recovery Vault (ORV). This team is responsible for Okta's enterprise-grade soft-delete and object recovery capability, designed to protect critical identity objects (Users and Groups) from accidental or malicious deletion.
As a Senior Engineer, you will own the technical design, implementation, and operational reliability of critical components within our real-time, high-fidelity recovery system. You will solve complex engineering problems around identity preservation (UUIDs) and relationship restoration - including group memberships, app assignments, and password hashes - ensuring our customers can seamlessly recover from data loss events.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Feature Execution: Drive the technical design and end-to-end implementation of complex features, such as granular and bulk recovery workflows across Free and Advanced Resilience tiers.
- Component Design: Design and build reliable core components for real-time recovery systems that capture deletion events and support scalable data restoration.
- Relationship & State Management: Solve challenging engineering problems around relationship restoration (group memberships, app assignments, device enrollments) and state consistency.
- Security & Compliance: Implement secure logging and tracking for all recovery operations (soft-delete, restore, permanent-delete) in Syslog to adhere to strict audit and compliance standards.
- Product & Cross-Functional Alignment: Partner with Product Managers and technical leads to clarify requirements, define technical scope, and break down complex projects into actionable milestones.
- Operational Excellence: Participate in on-call rotations, troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis (RCAs), and enhance system observability, logging, and metrics.
- Code Quality & Technical Standards: Champion engineering best practices through thorough code reviews, automated testing, and comprehensive technical documentation.
- Team Growth: Provide guidance and peer mentorship to intermediate and junior engineers on the team to foster technical growth and code quality.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Experience: 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience building and scaling highly reliable, production-grade applications.
- Java Expertise: Strong proficiency in object-oriented programming, with extensive experience in Java and the Spring Boot framework.
- Distributed Systems: Solid experience with distributed system patterns, asynchronous job processing, and event-driven architectures (essential for bulk restore operations).
- Data Management: Proficiency with relational databases (e.g., MySQL) and caching strategies (e.g., Redis) to manage state and high-throughput data snapshots.
- API Design: Proven experience designing, building, and maintaining robust RESTful APIs for enterprise integration.
- Problem Solving & Ownership: Proven track record of independently breaking down ambiguous requirements into clean, scalable software designs.
Nice to Haves
- Familiarity with Identity and Access Management (IAM) standards (SCIM, SAML, OAuth, OIDC) or directory services (AD, LDAP).
- Experience with resilient systems design (e.g., retry strategies, circuit breakers, rate limiting).
- Hands-on experience with feature flagging frameworks and gradual/canary deployment strategies.
- Experience with queueing systems or message brokers (e.g., Kafka).
Education and Training
- B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
